September Update

"And we pray for the children...who don't have any rooms to clean up,
whose pictures aren't on anybody's dresser, whose monsters are real."
- Ina J. Hughes

Let me start by saying "Thank You!!!" to those that were able to respond to our recent plea for help after Holly House experienced a fire in one of the rooms that houses six girls.  We were able to wire almost $1000 to the director of  Holly House by late Tuesday.  That will cover the costs of repairs to the building, and start them well on their way to replacing beds, clothes and school books.  Even more funds have come in to help after we made the wire transfer.  We will be forwarding the additional funds to Holly House very soon.  Again, THANK YOU!!!  For these children, this will mean so much.  We will keep you updated as repairs are made to the building and the children recover from this horrible accident.

CHINA

So many good things have been happening here, that it is hard to know where to begin.  We have some wonderful volunteers who continually knit hats for us.  Many times they knit them faster than we distribute them.  We were very happy to be able to send 220 hats and 13 blankets to China, as part of a shipment of blankets and other items that Love Without Boundaries is sending to China Charity Federation for distribution.  We know these will help keep many orphans warm this winter.
In addition, we forwarded the money for a semesters tuition for Hong.  Hong is the first orphan in the Guangdong province to attend university.  We are so very pleased and honored to be able to help her.
As part of our on-going support to nutritional programs, we also were able to forward additional funds to Love Without Boundaries.  Nutrition and vitamins have been a very large focus for us recently.  It is just so important that these little ones not be hungry.
RUSSIA

Barb has returned from her second trip to Russia this year.  It has been wonderful to sit and talk about the needs and the programs we are working on.  On this trip, she took many of supplies of educational toys, shoes, etc. to the orphanages.
While there, she was also able to evaluate some of their more pressing needs and began helping with those.  Medicines such as tylenol and antibiotics are in need for the orphanages in Russia.  Also, supplemental nutrition for the children is greatly needed.  Cans of formula were purchased for the babies, and vitamins for older children.   The orphanages were also very happy to receive diapers for the babies.
The children were ecstatic to have toys, including Hot Wheels to play with on the floor.  We sent a PlayHut structure with tunnels, cubes and balls to encourage play and help with motor skill development.  Barb reported that the children loved it so much that they were inside the first cube the moment is was opened and did not want to wait for the rest of the structure to be set up.
The other major request we received from the orphanages in Russia is pediatric blood pressure cuffs.  They are unable to get them in Russia.  We were able to purchase several kits with various sizes of cuffs and deliver them.

AFRICA

Construction continues on the Galilee Secondary School building.   As the first floor nears completion, we are still short about $400 to finish the building.   We are very excited about the school and hope it will be ready for the start of the next school year in February.
Sponsorships of students at Galilee Primary School are growing.  Five out of the ten children who are currently on the list to be sponsored have found sponsor.  If you would like more information on becoming a sponsor click on the picture of Christine to the right.  She is 5 years old and awaiting a sponsor.
Phionia, a 4 year old at Holly House, was evaluated for a cleft lip.  The doctors said she should receive surgery for a cleft lip and palate.  We are working on getting her surgery completed.
We have also begun working with a new school, Humble Hearts, in Nairobi.  Humble Hearts is a school for the deaf.  All of the students are orphans or from extreme poverty and are unable to afford the special education for deaf students.  Humble Hearts was established to fill this gap.  We will be beginning a sponsorship program with these students, and are working on establish other programs for them as well.  Watch for more news in the coming months.

WHAT'S NEW

As we continue to evaluate the needs in various countries and orphanages, we want to meet the challenges the children and workers there face.  If only we could do it all.  We have again expanded our line of gift cards, to include new items in several areas.  Please take a look, and remember these the next time you need a gift.

If you haven't seen the Passenger Pals yet, be sure to check them out.  They would make a great stocking stuffer this year!

In November, we will be holding an online multicultural auction.  The items for auction will come from some of the various countries we support.  We are working to pick unique items from several countries.  We will keep you updated as we finalize the details.  Think of this for Christmas presents!  The items we have collected already are beautiful!!

We have expanded our Amazon.com affiliation to include amazon.co.uk, amazon.fr, amazon.ca and amazon.de.  It was pointed out to us that the Amazon.com affiliation only wasn't practical for those who live overseas and would like to help.  The information and the links for these programs can be found on our page that tells you how to support Angel Covers while you do your normal online shopping.
*****

Thank you as always to everyone for your tremendous support.  We fall in love with these kids daily and their needs just break our hearts.  While we wish they could all have their own bedroom, and a family who will keep their picture on the dresser or mantle, we don't let our limitations stop us from doing what we can.  Some of these beautiful children experienced a real monster with the fire at Holly House this week, but thanks to everyone's generosity, the kids know they are cared for and loved by others around the world.  We are so grateful for the adults who are there to care for them and keep them safe.
