October Update

Whenever I think of a world filled with love,
Whenever I want to right what’s wrong,
I often see the answer in the children’s loving eyes,
For in their meekness, they are strong.

I had the opportunity this past month to hear the Watoto Children's Choir from Uganda perform.  What an amazing group of children they are!  If you ever have the chance to see them as they travel the United States and England don't pass it up.  They travel to raise awareness about children's issues in Uganda, and to help raise support for children's homes being built.  This is a wonderful program that is helping the victims of  AIDS and war.  One thing that really stands out about these children is their hope.  With all they have been through, they have incredible hope for the future.  You also see in them how truly happy and grateful they are for sponsorship and everything they have.  It was so encouraging to see them and know that they embody the feelings of the children all around the world we help support.  Together we do make a difference in the lives of the children we touch.

AFRICA

I need to start this letter off on a sad note.  As many of you know we have been helping to support the RACIN school and orphanage in northern Uganda.  It was with a very heavy heart that we had to make the decision to end this support as we can no longer insure that the donations and money will be used in the manner they are intended to help the children.  Pastor Deo, who was the director at RACIN died a couple of months ago.  While the board of directors was working to sort out leadership roles, control of the school was taken over by an individual who had everything legally moved into his name.  The board did not have the confidence in this individual and would not have appointed him to lead RACIN.  While there are some underlying details left out of the story, we want you to know that we do carefully monitor our programs and are not going to send support to locations where we cannot insure the proper use of funds.  It breaks our hearts to have to make this decision and not support the 300 children there.  However, we also know that if we continue to send money for those children, they would not be helped by it.  We take comfort in the fact that if the chicken program started there is managed well, the children will be fed.  We will continue to monitor the situation as best we can, and if we develop confidence that funds will not be mis-used, we will resume programs.

On a brighter note, we are beginning programs in Kenya with the Humble Hearts School for the Deaf.  This school was started to provide education to deaf children who are orphans and children who come from extreme poverty.  This group of 20 children vary in age and grade.  Most of them walk several miles to the school each day, but they do so with great eagerness at the opportunity to learn.  You can read a little bit about Humble Hearts on our Africa programs page.  We will be starting a sponsorship program for the students there.  We are finishing up the web page and biographies now.  We should have them up in the next couple of weeks.

The repairs to Holly House that were needed due to the fire are complete.  The structure of the building has been repaired, and the inside is also finished.  The money that was so generously donated to help with the expenses from the fire was enough to pay for the repairs, and purchase all of the items the children lost in the fire.  All we can say to you is "thank you" and we know how much this means to the children.

CHINA

We have placed our order next order for bouncers.  There will be 530 bouncers going to 20 orphanages over the next few weeks.  It is just so exciting to think about the difference Project Tigger is making.  Thank you to everyone who has contributed!  We want to let the group from YongZhou in the Hunan province know that their funds were able to purchase 250 of these bouncers and will be shipped to 10 different orphanages in YongZhou.  Way to go group!

We also sent bouncers to the Pingnan, Guangxi orphanage.  The director is thrilled with the bouncers, but also asked if we can help replace their cribs that are extremely old and in disrepair.  He reports they also could use some help with clothes and nutrition.  We are currently working to raise the funds to provide 25 new cribs to keep the babies safe and will work towards their other needs as well.  For $50 we purchase and have a new crib shipped to Pingnan through our crib program.  If you would like to help by purchasing all or part of a crib just mark your donation with Pingnan.  Cribs for babies also make a great gift through given in the name of someone through our gift card program.

We have also raised a significant amount of money to support the ongoing nutritional programs.  It is great to receive the positive reports of the difference that adequate nutrition makes.  It only takes $5 a month to feed a baby.  With your help we should be able to establish a program for Pingnan in no time.  This is another way to give a significant yet small gift with a gift card!

CHILD OF THE MONTH

Each month we will be featuring a child on our home page who is on a waiting child list somewhere.  This month we have a young man from China who is 10 years old.  He was found in 2003 and is completely healthy.  He attends school and is gets along well with others.  His desire is to be adopted by a foreign family.  He is a very active young man.  If you would like to be his family or have additional questions please contact AAC Adoption and Family Network, Inc. at (970) 532-3576 or e-mail aacadopt@frii.com.

WHAT'S NEW

We have been working with Open Arms India to provide blankets for all of the children in their children's homes.  It is our hope that each child will have at least one blanket if not two by Christmas.  A donation of $11 will enable us to send a blanket via airmail to insure it will arrive  by the time they are needed.  If you would like to help with this project please indicate with your donation that this is for Open Arms India.

*****
The strength of the kids we help is just astounding.  They have the drive and desire to receive an education and make a difference in this world when they grow up.  They make the most of everything they are given, and are incredibly thankful for the help they receive.  The letters we read from the children express their joys, thankfulness, and excitement about having someone believe in and support them.  Please allow me to pass on that thanks, and please know that your support is changing lives and giving children great strength!
