In late August 2005, Love Without Boundaries learned about an incredible group of young women determined to bring a brighter future to themselves, their families, and their villages. Although most of these girls are not orphans, they have beaten the odds with strong will, steadfast determination, and lots of hard work. These girls have been accepted to high school, but they live in the impoverished Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in QingHai Province, where the average family income is $100 per year, and the size of most of their families is 6 or more. One girl has 13 members of her family living together, with a total family annual income of just $98USD. Some of these students are the very first girls in their village to be accepted to high school. They want nothing more than to have the opportunity to learn. We know that their mothers hold that same wish - for their daughters to be given an opportunity that was never open to them. Angel Covers was honored to be asked to help expand this life-changing program. Angel Covers is currently seeking sponsors for 67 of these hard working girls, and will have even more children available each fall.
Additionally, a few young women who had done what for most is the impossible. They had achieved their high school education, taken and passed the national exams, and been accepted to University. WOW. They dreamed of studying everything from Tibetan literature to science and engineering, to ecology and geology, to history, to medicine. They had already put in the long, hard hours to reach this seemingly impossible goal, and because of their dedication, they had a spot reserved for them at universities in China. All they lacked were the funds to allow them to follow their dreams and soar to success.
We received the information on these students because in this region a child is considered to be an "orphan" if one parent dies, due to the extreme hardship that is caused by the loss of income. The majority, but not all, of the college-bound girls have lost one parent, most often their father. Most of the younger girls going to high school have two parents (sometimes disabled) with extremely limited income. In fact, most of the families collect wild plants to sell as medicine, and that is their sole income.
Sponsorships for the teenage girls to attend high school are just $10 per month. This covers their education, and still has some left over to help support their living expenses. The girls have moved away from their villages to attend school.
- $10 per month sends one student to middle or high school
- $10 per month provides supplemental food and additional support to orphans with no living relatives
- $35 per month pays college tuition
- $45 per month pays accommodations
- $100 pays transportation to/from University
- $20 per month provides supplemental food and additional support such as clothing, personal hygiene items, and pocket money to college students.
Sponsor a student today!
Sponsorships for the college students are more expensive, so we divided up the costs and assigned more than one sponsor to most college students. Tuition is due on or before September 1st of each year, so sponsors can choose to make one payment for the entire year, or make monthly payments. Just $35 per month sponsors tuition; $45 per month sponsors sparse accommodations while at University, and $100 (total) sponsors travel expenses to get them from their remote mountain villages to the universities. Many of these students had to travel two days by horse and eight days by other transportation just to get to the Universities. Transportation costs vary depending on which University the students attend.
This is an incredible opportunity to empower intelligent, ambitious, determined girls and young women who, once educated, can truly give back in a meaningful way. By helping them to gain an education, their sponsors are helping them to return home better able to support their families and contribute to their communities.
School starts September 1st, and thanks to one very generous donor, these 67 high school girls and 3 college girls were able to attend school during the 2006-2007 school year. Now, we must find sponsors for these remarkable young women for the 2007-2008 school year. Please consider showing them how much you care by sponsoring one of these hard working girls today. Together we can make a difference in the lives of children who live in a part of the world in which there is an 8% literacy rate!
