The Yushu Batang County Central Boarding Primary School is located near Yushu County’s capital. 413 students study and live at the school. Of these 413 students, 59 are orphans (both parents deceased) or half-orphans. The Batang School is currently a primary school; however, the government has given approval to set up a middle school, which is located near to the primary school. Unfortunately, the school does not have the funds needed to set up a new middle school at this time.
The school currently owns over 100 yaks, which allows the students to have milk every day. This area is completely dependent on yaks, which provide food (yak meat, milk, cheese, and butter), clothing, shelter, crop assistance, and fuel (dung for heat and for cooking). Yaks graze off the land and do not need any food supplements. Thanks to a wonderful
family, 70 of these yaks were purchased in 2006. This has helped provide adequate nutrition for the children at the school. Before these yaks were purchased nutritional support was the greatest need of the Batang School.
In addition to the yaks that were purchased for nutritional support, the school has many other needs:
- New kitchen (the current one fills the dining hall with smoke during meals)
- Additional dormitory(ies) for children
- Additional classrooms
- Toilet facilities (they have no toilet)
- Heaters (all rooms, including sleeping rooms, are heated with stoves burning yak dung) – electricity is intermittent
- Individual beds and bedding for children (they do not have beds now)
- Clothing for children
- School books and supplies
Thanks to Love Without Boundaries, the school received water and shower facilities in 2007. Using a solar heating system, four shower rooms were installed. The teachers report that illness in the school has been reduced, as the children are now able to practice better hygiene habits, such as brushing their teeth and washing their hands in the new wash basins.
It is our desire to help this school continue to make progress in the health and education of the children. While large donations would allow for larger projects to be completed, sponsorship of an orphan student can make a great difference in a child's life. For $10 a month, you can help one of these students receive needed medical care, clothing, books for school, and extra nutrition. Learn more about sponsoring a student at the Batang School.
