August Update
"We are one world and these children are our children. Their fate is
our fate,
each of us can make a difference. Everyone can help to save
lives."
--Archbishop Desmond Tutu
It always amazes me to stop and think how much can be done with so
little. Most children around the world don't have lots of true
needs. However, the children we serve have great needs but
frequently only dream of having those needs met. Their dreams are
of food, just enough to not be hungry. Their dreams are of having
a place to sleep that is warm and safe. Their dreams are of the
things in life we take for granted; things which are so basic it's hard
to imagine there are millions of children who don't have them.
It's my dream to make a difference for these children one precious
child at a time.
The last couple of months have been busy not only continuing with
projects that are underway, but also in laying the groundwork for new
projects. In China, we have continued to work diligently to
complete the Hands of Hope project. We have had a couple of
setbacks, which have not allowed construction to begin yet, but we are
working to secure the remaining approvals we need to begin
construction. We are happy China has hired someone to begin
administration of the Orphan Relief Fund, and we continue to have the
full support of the Orphan Relief Fund for construction of Hands of
Hope. Hopefully, we will be able to resolve the remaining issues
quickly and begin construction.
We have continued to support nutrition and education programs in
China. Several hundred dollars were sent over the last couple of
months. These programs are essential to continue supplementing
what the orphanages are able to afford. We also felt privileged
to be able to fund the development of a physical therapy room in the
QuJiang orphanage in the Guangdong province. Even where basic
nutrition needs are met, the children who need physical therapy usually
have this need unmet. Project Tigger continues to be
successful. Many thanks to the groups who have donated for their
specific orphanages. We will be ordering 300 to 500 bouncers
soon, and they will go to at least 15 different orphanages. If
you would like to help us extend the reach of Project Tigger
please consider a donation or organize your orphanage group to send
bouncers.
The blanket program continues to be strong. In the past couple of
months we have supplied blankets to orphanages in India, kenya, and to
children with AIDS in Uganda. We continually receive pictures
back from the orphanages of the children who are extremely thankful and
happy to have their new blanket. In some cases, this blanket
becomes their bed. As we begin to approach the fall, think about
a new stadium
blanket in your favorite teams colors. Keep warm in the
stands as you cheer them on, and help an orphan stay warm at the same
time.
So much has been happening with the Africa programs recently. We
have been able to complete a second chicken program so these children
will not go hungry. We are also beginning to lay the ground work
for three more programs. It is so exciting to see these programs
as they help the orphanages and schools be more self-sufficient in
feeding the children and having the ability to generate income to
provide for basic needs. Read about this program and
what can
be accomplished. We are grateful for the establishment of Jael's
promise. It has already begun to help children receive the
medical care that they need, but as always there are more children in
need than there are funds available. This is an area where less
than $10 can save a life.
Schools in extremely poor areas of Africa tend to be poorly
constructed. Often times they are nothing more than poles and
sheet metal put together to make a shelter. These structures can
and have in the past collapsed and caused children to be injured.
We have been working with the Galilee School to help with the
construction of a new building. The plan is for a two story
building that will have multiple classrooms. The building is
being built to code in Kenya so that will be safe. We are working
to complete the first floor right now, but do not have the complete
funds to finish the project. Currently, Galilee serves over 650
students, but is extremely overcrowded with no room to expand.
For less than $2000 we can complete the first floor in time for school
to begin in February of next year. Completion of this building
will also allow us to work towards a computer lab. The children
will then learn computer skills needed get higher paying jobs and break
the cycle of poverty that they come from. Please take a moment to
look at the progress that has been made and consider a small gift to help us continue
construction.
I believe Bishop Tutu was right when he said each of us can make a
difference. So many times we look at problems around the world
and they seem to monumental to overcome. But when approached one
piece at a time, the tasks are less daunting and progress can be
made. Each of us truly can make a difference and for so
little. If everyone reading this letter could find a way to send
$5, the school in Nairobi could be completed, another chicken program
could be started, and more babies could be bouncing in China.
Changing lives doesn't take huge and heroic measures, just a small
effort from all of us. How would you like to make a difference?
